Project Log:  Saturday, November 20, 2010

Over the past week or so, as time allowed, I managed to complete the specifications and measured drawings for the new tankage--six tanks in all.  Being a student of the pre-computer 80s, and with little interest in and need for fancy (i.e. modern) design techniques, I hand-drew (gasp!) the tankage drawings, knowing full well that any attempts on my part to use one of the widely-available CAD-type programs would end in frustration and unnecessary delays.

I made additional evolutionary changes to the new tankage designs for the engine room.  In an effort to simplify the design and construction, with minimal reduction in effective tank volume, I decided to change the outboard sides of the tanks from three facets (as seen in my cardboard templates of late) to only two.  I thought the extra volume gained from the more complex shape simply wasn't worth it; the two-sided outboard shape followed the shape of the hull closely enough.

With the designs completed, my next step would be to compile the specifications and measured drawings, carefully check the various specs, and send the designs off to one or more tank manufacturers for quotations and final design manipulation as necessary.

Here are the finished designs for the tanks.  Note:  all specifications and information subject to change.
